The origins of the coat commonly known as the "p-coat" are believed to date back to the 18th century. The name itself is derived from the Dutch term "Pijekker", which was later anglicized-"Pi" referring to coarse wool fabric and "jekker" meaning jacket. While several European military forces have adopted similar styles over the years, this particular P-Coat is based on the model used by the U.S. Navy for non-commissioned officers in the 1910s. One of the defining characteristics of the 1910s U.S. Navy P-Coat is its thick, high-density melton wool construction providing excellent insulation against harsh maritime conditions. Another signature detail is the anchor buttons engraved with thirteen stars, a reference to the original thirteen states of the Union when the United States declared independence in 1777. Though the exact date of adoption remains unclear, U.S. Navy uniform regulations from World War I era already listed the overcoat as standard issue for non-commissioned officers.
